Waymo's Driverless Cabs Planned for London Streets Next Year.

American company Waymo has declared that its autonomous taxis will be operational for hire on London's roads beginning next year.

UK Capital Named as Pioneering European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.

London will become the pioneering European city to introduce an driverless taxi service, comparable with those already familiar in multiple US cities and several American locations using Waymo's cutting-edge platform.

Preliminary Trials to Start with Human Specialists.

Waymo stated that its fleet are presently en route to London and will begin driving on the capital's roads in the coming weeks with experienced operators supervising the vehicles.

Waymo – initially established as a spin-off from Google's self-driving car program and belonging to the Alphabet family – indicated it would scale up services and work closely with the Department for Transport and the city's mobility organization to secure the required licenses to deliver completely driverless trips by 2026.

Expanding Interest in Self-Driving Transport Across London.

Additional firms, such as Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have also revealed their own strategies to trial self-driving taxis in the capital next year.

This comes after the UK authorities confirming it would fast-track regulations enabling real-world tests to take place before laws enabling autonomous cars becomes law in full.

“I'm delighted that Waymo aims to introduce their offerings to London next year, under our proposed piloting scheme,” stated the official, the secretary.

“Boosting the autonomous vehicle industry will enhance available transport options alongside bringing jobs, funding, and possibilities to the UK. Advanced investment like this will help us deliver our goal to be world leaders in emerging tech and spearhead national renewal.”

Comprehensive Launch Projected After New Legislation Takes Effect.

A broader introduction of driverless vehicles is expected in the UK after the related legislation fully takes effect in late 2027.

The Company's Established Ties in the UK and Beyond.

Waymo already has ties to Britain after establishing its first European engineering hub in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also introducing operations in Tokyo using JLR EVs, marking its second current operation beyond the United States.

“Evidence confirms how to safely expand completely driverless taxi services, and we look forward to expand the positive impacts of our platform to the Britain,” said the company executive, noting that the system was “improving road safety and transportation more accessible”.

Demonstrated Track Record in the United States.

Waymo introduced its self-driving vehicles in 2020 and now states it has carried over ten million customers in the US.

Regardless of some alarming events, Waymo indicated that statistics showed that vehicles driven by humans were linked to accidents that hurt people on foot at a much higher rate than its autonomous fleet.
