Keely Hodgkinson Concludes Season with Winning Performance at Athlos Meet in NYC
Hodgkinson achieved her fastest time of 1:54.61 the previous season in London.
Keely Hodgkinson concluded her 800m campaign with a win at the women-only Athlos event in New York on Friday night.
{The current Olympic gold medallist, who earned third place at the global championships recently, dominated an outstanding victory in one minute 56.53 seconds in what was only her sixth race in a year impacted by a hamstring injury.
Compatriot and global silver winner Georgia Bell finished second again in one minute 58.33 seconds, while St Vincent's Shafiqua Maloney (one minute 58.57) secured third place.
"I've barely raced this year so it was likely less of a struggle for me to go out there and be motivated to perform," stated Hodgkinson.
"The environment out there is crazy so it was really, really fun."
The female-exclusive meet packed Icahn Stadium in its second edition, bringing a party atmosphere to conventional athletics, with live music and special crowns replacing traditional winners' medals.
The 23-times tennis major winner Serena W., who is married to the founder of Athlos Alexis O., was present to award the victors with their tiaras.
Last year's winners took home sixty thousand dollars (forty-four thousand six hundred and three pounds) - among the biggest cash prizes in athletics.
The competition also attracted some of the sport's biggest names, as the Kenyan triple Olympic champion and global record breaker Faith Kipyegon won the mile, finishing in 4:17.78.
American Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the 100m and 200m double.
