The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
