A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the hours before Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

Several of other platform users also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to political events.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
